Guide to Elementary Schools Zones In NYC
Shifting base to another city can be a daunting
task especially if the city is all new and as grandeur as the one that I
shifted to. New York City has a lot to offer. There is a plethora of options
for everything that you can imagine. Ranging from restaurants to shopping
places, from daily needs to essential findings like an elementary school NYC
has it all.
While most of it can be helpful with a variety
of options, when it comes to choosing an elementary school in NYC, options only
tend to confuse. So choosing an elementary school for my child was not an easy
task to accomplish as I had just shifted to NYC.
When I started looking for an elementary school
for my daughter, I naturally went online and was thrown with overwhelming
information about criteria to choose a school. Going through the experiences of
people I realized that the best way choose an elementary school in NYC was to
build my own criteria and work towards it.
When it comes to choosing which school to send
your kid to, where you live matters a lot. That said, it is far from the
deciding factor and there are many irregularities to the Department of
Education’s system of zones and districts. There are also many alternatives to
the DOE’s zoned schools as well as tricks to navigating the zoning system.
This is important to know and understand
because we as parents need to be available at the elementary school’s beck and
call in case of any emergency or otherwise. As a parent it is our innate
responsibility to be present and participate in the activities of elementary
schools when required.
NYC is divided into 32 geographic districts as
per the department of education systems. These districts cover many
neighborhoods and many schools. These districts are further sub-divided into
smaller zones that define the area that has a school allotted to it.
When it comes to elementary school placements
and especially kindergarten placement, your school zone is an important factor.
The exact address determines the school and that further tells you the school
that your kid has a seat reserved in. This vital information helps in making a
logical decision while deciding on a school for your child.
