Elementary Education in Brooklyn
Elementary education is all about building upon the
foundation that was laid during the preschool phase. Children between the ages
of 4 to 11 receive elementary school level education. Brooklyn, being the most
populous of all of the five boroughs of New York City is dotted with numerous
public-run as well as private (independently run) elementary schools in almost
each of its neighborhoods. With an eclectic mix of inhabitants who have made
this place their home, Brooklyn elementary schools have students from all parts
of the world. There are White students, African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians,
as well as Pacific islanders.
This diversity seen in Brooklyn elementary schools has helped
students become more broad-minded individuals who whole-heartedly accept and
are a part of the rich cultural and ethnic heritage that is Brooklyn. Solid
education is provided by many elementary schools, but a wholesome education
which instills good human values and practices is considered ideal by most
parents.
The Brooklyn elementary educational curriculum focusses on
capitalizing on the inherent talents of each student by encouraging them, and
fostering in them, the willingness to learn and do more. The classroom
instruction offered for both compulsory and elective subjects for first graders
till eight graders is provided by trained elementary school teachers who employ
comprehensive techniques like usage of the latest state-of-the-art technology
and equipment along with fun and engaging teaching methods to involve the
students and help them learn better. Extra-curricular activities form an
integral part of the curriculum that help the students develop other skills,
apart from the basic, academic ones.
Neighborhoods like Brownsville in Brooklyn, which previously
was not considered to have the ideal environment for a school have seen a spurt
in the percentage of students studying at grade level from 32% (in 2014) to 41%
(in 2015) and a significant reduction in elementary school students absentee
rates. These schools are run in collaboration with social work organizations so
that students who suffer from issues like ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity
Disorder) can get the loving care and proper guidance they deserve. Brooklyn’s
elementary education scene is constantly evolving. These are indeed exciting
times to be a student in Brooklyn.
